Or, a less morbid way to say it, see the Box Score of Your Life.

walterwhiteIt is hard enough trying to summarize a good book or even Walter White’s life through five seasons of Breaking Bad, as shown in the image. While I have read only a few obituaries in my life, I always thought it impossible to do a life justice in an obituary. However, it is amazing what overall things you can summarize about your life, even now. While an obituary primarily gives the big picture of what you did in life after your life is over, what we are considering here is more of what you will go through during life before life is over to give us a forecast of what our overall experience will be depending on what worldview beliefs we build our life upon.

This comparison can be done with any two beliefs at a time, so choose the belief you currently stand on and another you want to compare with to see how your life will be different depending both on what belief you choose (1 or 2) and on what belief is true (A or B). We will start with an example comparing atheism (believing no God exists) and Christianity (believing the biblical God exists).

We start by dividing a box into four squares as shown below, having two rows for the two possible choices you can base your life upon and two columns for the truth of each belief system.

Finally, fill in each of the four squares. For example, we fill in square 1A based on this: If atheism is true (no God exists), and you lived your life as an atheist, then here is how your life would be different than if you made the mistake of basing your life on Christianity.

Fill in square 1B based on this: If Christianity is true (God exists), and you lived your life as an atheist, then here is how your life would be different because you made the mistake of basing your life on atheism. Then do the same for squares 2A & 2B. The basic differences are shown below for a summary or a box score of how things will be different for you depending on which of the four squares you are standing in when your beliefs and reality meet.

Either No God Exists OR God Exists
For An Atheist
  • Choices, responses, priorities, direction, etc. based on truth lead to supported, predictable results.
  • No time or effort is wasted on religious activities or goals.
  • You will die and nothing more will ever occur (aside from your body decomposing into component molecules).
  • You base much of life and efforts on trivial things, which will all pass away. Choices, goals, etc. are based on sand that will fail to support at times.
  • You will have times when the false hope/beliefs are exposed, and you will have to make emotional or willful decisions to ignore the truth.
  • Trusted guidance of inaccurate understanding of life may lead to some positive short-term experiences, but you will miss other good experiences and help that was available in life.
  • You will face the Creator whose relationship and purpose you rejected and will be in an eternal existence of negative consequences that will dwarf all the time and experiences on earth. You will not have an excuse or be able to change your situation.
For A Christian
  • Even Paul says we are pitiful when we base life on something that doesn’t exist. Furthermore, choices, goals, etc. are based on sand that will fail to support at times.
  • You will have times when the false hope/beliefs are exposed, and you will have to make emotional or willful decisions to ignore the truth.
  • Trusted guidance of a nonexistent authority may lead to some good in life, but you may miss out on some positive experiences.
  • You will die and nothing more will ever occur (aside from your body decomposing into component molecules).
  • Choices, responses, priorities, and direction, etc. based on truth lead to supported, predictable results.
  • Time, effort, and trust in God bring good throughout life.

You will have an eternal existence exactly as the Bible describes. This existence will dwarf the transient experiences of life.

This illustration can be done with any belief system. If the belief you currently choose to stand upon was not one of the ones in the example, then place yours in and complete the squares as done above. For example, Christianity can be contrasted with Hinduism, just the column headings have to be changed to (A) Hindu gods exist, or (B) biblical God exists. Or, atheism contrasted with agnosticism, with column headings changed to (A) No God exists, or (B) We cannot know whether God exists or not. Any combination of beliefs can be checked for the difference it will make in the life of the believer, depending on which belief fits reality and which does not. And if you are unsure of what belief you currently stand on, then a comparison of the different worldview beliefs are found in the Belief-by-Belief Cage Match section (still under construction).

Only 1 of those squares is safe, and will lead to the best possible results.

Therefore, it is ultimately significant that our worldview beliefs, how we view the world and our place in it, are accurate. Which takes us to the next logical question: How can we know which one is true? This topic is covered in the next section: How Can I Know?
