Part 4. What is the Purpose of Life?

What is the purpose of this object?
Audiences have come up with creative answers and potential uses, but only the creators KNOW the purpose for which it was made. The object you see in the picture was created by my friends, Kris, Steve, and myself, for the purpose of knocking on someone’s door remotely, while we hid across the street behind a car, or some bushes.
You tape the end of the small piece of fishing line to the front or back door, then reel out the long fishing line to allow you to get to your hiding place. Then, you are able to pull on the long line to swing the battery and knock on the door.
With practice, you can get good enough to make it sound just like someone knocking, and keep it from hitting the door when the angered home owner swings the door open, after repeated knocking. Eventually you make it knock while they have the door open, really freaks them out, but be ready to run as either the fishing line or your laughter can lead the incensed home-owner directly to you.
When anything, even a remote door knocker, is created by an intelligent agent, then only the creator can provide the reason or purpose of the creation. Other people can make their guesses, but only the creator can provide the definitive answer. This is why our primary BIG question (Does God exist?) must be known to answer our secondary BIG question (What’s the purpose of life?). These two biggest quesitons are linked. So regarding objective Purpose, with a capital “P”, there are only two options.
Only two options
Either (1) there is no God, and any purpose of life you think you have is just an illusion ( see article “Part 1. A Big Universe, A Bigger Question”). There is no true or objective purpose for all people equally. Furthermore, while each person can think they decide upon their own subjective purpose(s), this is simply illusion as your brain and all choices and actions are entirely controlled by natural laws. Experts in science and other fields of study, who reject the existence of God, believe this, because they have to.
On the other hand, if they are wrong about the primary BIG question in life, then they are also incorrect about the PURPOSE of life.
The alternative is: (2) God does exist, and there is objective meaning and purpose equally true for all of us, established by the authority, who would know. As we saw in the last section, the evidence, which supports an intelligent agent is behind the Universe, is astronomically large and trends upward as time goes on. Therefore, the vast, vast Universe was produced with an even vaster purpose for you in mind. This idea doesn’t just sound nice, it is the one supported by the evidence.
So, what is the vast or primary Purpose for my life? Only the creator would know the objective Purpose of life, the meaning of life, which is equally applied to all people, and if the biblical God exists, then the Bible, and Jesus have spelled it out. You can get a good glimpse once you become a parent. As a parent, what would you want most for your little creation(s)? A relationship of love and trust with you, and for them to love and encourage others to flourish and develop in the fullest sense.
The same is true of the creator, if the biblical God exists, our perspective would also include an eternal existence after this life, therefore, developing your relationship with God and helping others, who are also purposefully set on this Earth, would take precedence over what one may experience on Earth.
What about a “happy little life”?
When realizing the evidence supports the meaning of life noted above, many don’t like the sound of that Purpose. I can relate, even those who accept God, at least the person writing this article, at times would rather dictate my own Purpose, instead of developing a relationship with God and serving others.
Like a child with the “world-revolves-around-me” selfish thinking, we often want to be the god of our own world, but also like a child, we don’t have the authority or even the capability to know what’s best for us. We needed proper guidance because reality doesn’t care what we think or want, reality just brings the consequences of inaccurate thinking. Only an Authroity, in a proper position to know, can provide the Purpose, which will lead to the best for us.
Therefore, wanting a “happy life” is natural, a fine purpose to pursue, and can lead to good things in life. But is also unreliable, often outside our control, and will not lead to the best for us unless within the proper context of the overall Purpose. This is where “faith” comes in, because even with your belief in Jesus supported by evidence on a level no other belief system can reach, you still will be inclined to prioritize your own purposes over God’s, and it takes faith, or trust in your Heavenly Parent to seek that relationship and Purpose first.
And if God truly loves and wants the best for you, as the cross and much other evidence demonstrate, including what you may have already observed in your own life, then the God who is in the position to know, and have authority over the big picture, can provide something greater than a “happy life”, the promise is we can have “joy”, which not only exceeds “happiness” in impact, but also cannot be taken from us regardless of what life throws in our way. But, the topic of “joy” is an entirely different article, so back to purpose . . .
Of course, you would still have other purpose(s) to pursue, which will not have the deepest and widest impact on you as the objective Purpose, yet you have the free will to choose and prioritize additional purpose(s), and those are individualized to you. There are many more related questions, for example, you may be thinking, “What about just being a good person, or loving my kids, or achieving something important?” Or, how do you know this is the creator’s primary purpose, do you have any verification? Or, it’s my life, how about I just choose my purpose(s)? All good questions to ask, and these and other interesting related issues are covered in the article and activity: “Creating & Graphing Me” (currently under construction, but the steps are given below).
You are already basing your life, even determining much of your day today, according to your answer to the “Purpose” question. Best to know how solid your investment is, which depends on the evidence. And, because you may not be entirely aware of your answer, and most of us even have two contradictory answers – the one we claim, and the one we actually base our lives on – to make things simple and clear requires three interesting steps:
- First, we must look at what are the options for purposes of our life – with a THOUGHTFUL EXPERIMENT
- Second, we must look at a topic of interest to you – YOU – by directly seeing a GRAPH OF YOU (you just have to add in your list of purposes)
- Finally, using the graph we can PREDICT much of the good or bad you will experience.
