Part 2. How do we know when an intelligent agent is involved, or if it is pure chance?

Answer: CSI or Logic

[/fusion_title][fusion_text columns=”” column_min_width=”” column_spacing=”” rule_style=”default” rule_size=”” rule_color=”” animation_type=”” animation_direction=”left” animation_speed=”0.3″ animation_offset=”” hide_on_mobile=”small-visibility,medium-visibility,large-visibility” class=”” id=””]There are a number of approaches you could use, this section will give two options for you to decide which you like better, as either approach can be used to apply the awesome scientific evidence covered in part 3, and provide a robust answer to whether an intelligent agent is behind the Universe, or just pure nature and chance. You decide which approach suits you better. 2.1 Uses a CSI approach, 2.2 uses a logical argument.

2.1 CSI

If a dead body is found, and it is not immediately clear whether the death was the result of natural causes, an accident, or a purposeful homicide, then the crime scene investigation (CSI) unit collects and examines evidence to determine what happened. What they are looking for are known indicators of an intelligent agent’s purposeful actions, or conversely, purely natural causes.

EVIDENCE OF PURPOSE: Ranges & Combinations

Figure 6. Something is not right.

Goldfish seem so simple to sustain, basically just add some water and food periodically. Yet, as my nephew tearfully found out, all life is dependent on ranges & combinations.

Nothing is more dependent on precise ranges and combinations than life in our Universe, which leads to our ability to do some CSI on what we discovered about our Universe.  Researchers know, and study the difference between intelligent agents acting, and purely natural results. This understanding is productively used in criminal jurisprudence (CSI), copyright law, patent law, reverse-engineering, cryptanalysis, archeology, anthropology, information theory, etc. And we will use it.[/fusion_text][fusion_title title_type=”text” rotation_effect=”bounceIn” display_time=”1200″ highlight_effect=”circle” loop_animation=”off” highlight_width=”9″ highlight_top_margin=”0″ before_text=”” rotation_text=”” highlight_text=”” after_text=”” content_align=”left” size=”1″ font_size=”” animated_font_size=”” line_height=”” letter_spacing=”” text_color=”” animated_text_color=”” highlight_color=”” style_type=”default” sep_color=”” animation_type=”” animation_direction=”left” animation_speed=”0.3″ animation_offset=”” hide_on_mobile=”small-visibility,medium-visibility,large-visibility” class=”” id=””]

Personal, Intelligent Cause – or – Purely Nature

[/fusion_title][fusion_text columns=”” column_min_width=”” column_spacing=”” rule_style=”default” rule_size=”” rule_color=”” animation_type=”” animation_direction=”left” animation_speed=”0.3″ animation_offset=”” hide_on_mobile=”small-visibility,medium-visibility,large-visibility” class=”” id=””]

An intelligent agent uses:

  1. choice to discriminate among a range of options, and
  2. the collection of choices fit together in a specific combination, which
  3. fits all of the externally established patterns, needed to reach
  4. a specified purpose, and the result often
  5. displays complexity (not order, but high information content, instructions, beyond natural laws) not easily repeatable by chance.

On the other hand, nature + chance can only act within mathematical probabilities, physical laws and limits, and has no capacity for reaching purposes or complexity beyond natural forces, resulting in repetitive features with order, but relatively few instructions needed to specify its structure.

Figure 7. Open a lock: requires properties found in intelligent agents.

Let’s use a familiar example to illustrate. Purposeful designers of school lockers wanted to ensure student’s personal lockers couldn’t be opened by chance. Your locker would not open unless you (1) make a choice to turn to a specific number among a range of options, (2) and repeat your choice three times (turning to three numbers) in specific combination, (3) following the external pattern set by the lock manufacturer, (4) to reach the purpose of an open lock, (5) a result with enough complexity to not easily be achieved through chance.

Like the locker, unless the Universe matches each requirement for life, within a safe range, and all requirements fit in combination with each other, falling in line with what conscious life requires, then the locker to life stays closed.

LET’S MAKE THIS SIMPLE – The five aspects above may sound confusing, but people make this distinction between intelligent involvement and natural stuff all the time.

Even a child, who saw the Alphabet cereal message on the table, will not for a moment believe the letters just happened to spill that way by purely natural forces + chance.

Figure 8. A child will realize this is not by chance. Even Dr. Frank Turek will realize this 🙂

Why? Because the child recognizes choices were made among the range of letters, and these letters fit in combination to make a sentence, which fits the external pattern requirements of the English language (“external” meaning the rules for English do not control the letters), to reach a purpose. And if that purpose is not fulfilled, likely consequences will follow on the slow child’s tail-end.

While traveling, you come across two rock formations, can you determine which is man-made?

Figure 9. Man-in-the-Cliff verses Mount Rushmore: Can you determine which is man-made and which is nature + chance?

In (1a), natural processes of wind, water erosion, rock fragmentation, gravity, etc., can naturally produce the “Man in the Cliff” in New Hampshire. However, Mount Rushmore (1b) is not within the range of possibility for nature to act to create; instead, clearly an intelligent agent made numerous choices among the options of how to change the rock, and all those choices combine together for the specific purpose of conforming to the external patterns/requirements of the Presidents’ faces. In addition, nature is not capable of that complexity, given any amount of time or chances! Common sense.

Figure 10. Backside of Mount Rushmore, or new monument to almost all current politicians.

Incidentally, (1c) shows the often-neglected back-side of Mount Rushmore. Let’s do some initial CSI. You come home to find your door wide-open, specific drawers opened and tossed about the room, and specific high-cost items missing. Do you call the police – because you know an intelligent agent was acting with a purpose – or do you just resign yourself to being a victim of unfortunate occurrences in nature? Common sense. You naturally used the properties mentioned above and came to the conclusion an intelligent agent was involved.

When a person says something of meaning to you, writes a purposeful book, builds a functioning mechanism, or carries out a plan, s/he chooses from a range of sound options and combines them for speech, letter combinations for the book, part combinations for the mechanism, and a combination of actions for the plan to come together and achieve some specific purpose. If you listened to With or Without You by U2, read Hamlet, used an iPhone, or witnessed 9/11, you recognized the hallmarks of intelligent agency, and the very same hallmarks are evidenced in the Universe itself, which will be shown in the next section of The FINE-TUNED Evidence.

For now, just remember the locker or Alphabet cereal example, to help remember the CSI process and 5 standard properties experts in multiple fields of study utilize to determine if an intelligent agent was involved, or just pure chance.

2.2 A Formal Logical Argument

Figure 11. Sharing and considering differing ideas keeps you informed.

The word “argument” has come to evoke negative feelings in people, which is a shame because being good at making a case for something you believe to be true (an argument), and also being good at receiving an argument from another who believes something else to be true, is how you are best able to determine which course is best for you. Failure to do so, will only keep from from being a properly informed person, and damage your ability to make the best choices.

Now if you run into another person who gets too emotional, cannot hold a good discussion, uses defense mechanisms and weak responses to make their point or to ignore yours, then feel free to walk away from such a discussion as the probability of learning useful information or benefiting such a person is low. Find people who aren’t weak-minded teacups (while I never called anyone this during a discussion, I have thought it, such a shame logic has been all but dropped from education).

Anyway, a basic logical argument consists of premises, which are statements that are either true or not, and these premises lead to a conclusion. Here’s the great thing about logical arguments, if the structure of the argument is valid and the premises are true, then the conclusion is inescapable. Some may argue we never have absolute certainty in life, I may agree with that, but like everything else in life, how probable the premises are true, then you have that same probability the conclusion is true. So let’s look at a version of what’s known as the “Teleological Argument”:

Premise 1: The fine-tuning of the universe is the result of (a) physical necessity, (b) chance, (c) purposeful design, or d) some combination of the previous options.
Premise 2: It is not the result of physical necessity or chance.
Conclusion: Therefore, it is the result of purposeful design.

Again, this is a valid dedeuctive argument, so if premises 1 and 2 are true, the conclusion necessarily follows.

Whether you like the 5 properties of an intelligent agent using CSI, or like the simplicity of the three-step logic argument, the evidences providing amazing answers for either approach are next . . .
